A more detailed discussion of Free flow characteristics
in some of the more common infusion pumps.

Abbott Provider Pumps, including AIM+:  If the administration set is correctly inserted into the pump, free-flow is not possible.  However, once the administration set is removed from the pump, free-flow is possible depending upon the current orientation of the cassette mechanism, if the clamps on the administration set have not been closed.

AVI pumps:  Although AVI (Sims Deltec) has developed administration sets which prevent free-flow when the door is opened or the set is removed from the pump,  these sets only prevent free-flow on the later models, including the 280RT and the Mustang 3000.  Although earlier models use the same administration sets, free-flow is still possible when the set is removed from the pump without closing the clamps if you are using series 100, 200, 400, or 800.   Free-flow is also possible on these earlier models if the door is opened without closing the clamps on the administration set.  Model 270 has a detachable free-flow clamp which prevents free-flow if the door is opened, but not if the set is removed.  Manufacture of all models except the 3000 has been discontinued.

Baxter 300XL, Graseby MS16A and Sims Deltec CADD-Micro:  Syringe pumps cannot free flow when the administration set is removed from the pump, because syringes require positive pressure to be exerted on the plunger to release fluids.

Baxter 6200/6201:  Baxter has for the last few years been manufacturing sets which include a slide clamp which can be used in the 6201 to prevent free-flow when the administration set has been removed from the pump.  However, use of the same set will not prevent a free-flow in the 6200, which has been discontinued.  It is also possible to modify the configuration of the 6201 so that the free-flow protection on the administration set is disabled.  Both models have a clamp which prevents free-flow if the door mechanism is opened.

IVAC (Alaris):  None of the pre-Alaris IVAC models, including the 280 series, 580 series, or 590 series, has free-flow protection on the administration sets, nor will the pump guarantee free-flow protection if the door and follower housing are both opened without closing the clamps on the administration set.  Manufacture of all these models has been discontinued.

Sabratek 6060/3030:  The Sabratek 6060 has free-flow protection both when the administration set is correctly inserted into the pump and also when the set is removed from the pump.  The 3030 will have no free-flow with a correctly inserted set, even when the door mechanism is opened; however, removing the set from the pump without closing the clamps will cause a free-flow.

Sherwood and Sandoz Enteral Pumps:  All Sherwood and Sandoz administration sets will free-flow if removed from the pump without closing the clamps on the set.  Also, any generic enteral set that can be used on the pumps will cause a free-flow if the clamps are not closed.

Sims Deltec pumps:  All the CADD pumps use the same administration set mechanism.  When the cassette is inserted properly into the pump on model 5100, 5400, 5700, 5800 (and 5800R), and the 6100 and 6101 Prizm, there can be no free flow.  The Deltec Administration Sets come with either an add-on anti-siphon valve, or, an integral anti-siphon valve, and, when used according to the Instructions For Use from the manfufacturer (Deltec), the sets will not free-flow.

Sigma 6000/8000 series pumps, Med Spec One:  The 8000 series pumps have included free-flow protection which does not allow the user to remove the administration set from the pump without first closing the roller clamp, which restricts all free flow.  The same set used on a Sigma 6000-series pump can still free-flow, since the set can be removed from the 6000 pump without closing the roller clamp.  The 6000 series also has a free-flow mechanism which closes on the set if the door if inadvertently opened without closing the roller clamp.  The Med Spec One has the same free-flow limitations as the Sigma 6000-series pumps.

Zevex Enteralite:  Free-flow protections both on the pump and on the administration set prevent free-flow in any circumstance.
