The Nellcor Ami Apnea Monitor monitors the breathing patterns and heart rate of infants, and provides alarms for episodes of central apnea (cessation of breathing), bradycardia (slow heart rate), and tachycardia (fast heart rate). It provides extensive memory functions, and stored information can be downloaded via an RS-232 connection on the rear panel to a computer. Like other apnea monitors, any programmed limit that is exceeded sets off a piercing audio alarm; this "sibling alarm" can only be reset by a series of front panel inputs. The monitor is isolated from the patient by the patient cable, which is then attached to two lead wires, which are in turn inserted into electrodes attached to the patients chest.
Some versions (including the 9700A revision carried by Medical Specialties) are equipped with installed modem boards which allow download of information over phone data lines. The same patient cable and electrodes that are used on the Aequetron 9500 series monitors can be used on the Ami.
