McGaw

The McGaw family of infusion pumps includes the McGaw 521 (also known as the "Quest") Intelligent Pump, the McGaw 521+ Intelligent Pump, the 521C MicroRate Intelligent Pump ( a micro version of the 521), the 522 Intelligent Pump (similar to the 521, but with an independent secondary mode), and the McGaw Accupro. Also included are the newer Horizon and Horizon Nxt Modular Infusion Systems. The 522 and the Accupro have only limited availability from Medical Specialties, and are not covered by this handbook.

McGaw 521 and 521+ Intelligent Pumps

The McGaw 521, 521+, and 521C use dedicated McGaw Intelligent IV sets (see attached list) for volumetric delivery of fluids, and has operator-selectable positive pressure limits from 100 mmHg - 400 mmHg (approx. 2 - 8 PSI). Because of its extremely small delivery rates, the pressure limits for the 521C can be set as high as 500 mmHg (approx. 10 PSI).

Both the 521 and the 521+ also have the capability to deliver up to 9 rates and volumes in a sequential stepped program, useful for delivery of TPN or antibiotics. In addition, the 521+ has a Profile Mode which accepts ramp time, total volume, and duration information, and automatically calculates the bell-curve for infusion, and has a Titrate function which allows rate changes during infusion. The 521+ also has a keypad lock-out feature and various Biomedical-only program features not available on the earlier 521 models.

Rate Parameters:

521/521+: 1-999 mL/hr
521C: 0.1-999.9 mL/hr

Accuracy:

± 2%
521C:
± 2% at rates of 1-99.9 mL/hr
± 5% at flow rates of 0.1 - 0.9 mL/hr

McGaw Horizon and
Horizon Nxt

Rate Parameters: 0.1-999.9 mL/hr

Volume Range: 0.1-9999.9 mL

Battery Life: Dependent on state of battery charge and rate (20 hr. recharge required when depleted)

Pressure Limit: 75-500 mmHg ( 1.4 - 9.6 PSI)  User selectable limits at 75, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 750, with default set at 300 mmHg.

KVO: 3 mL/hr for rates 3-999 mL/hr, or continuation of rate for rates 0.1 - 2.9 mL/hr

Memory: Permanent, unless battery depleted

Accuracy: ± 5 %

The Horizon Modular System requires dedicated Horizon sets, and is recommended for all IV infusions, including blood, lipids, TPN, and epidural infusions, and in the case of the Nxt version, intermittent infusion.. It can also accept luer-locking syringes from 10-60 mls. A user-selectable occlusion pressure limit can be set from 75 - 500 mm Hg (approx. 1.4 - 9.6 PSI).

The Horizon also incorporates two automatic multiple delivery modes, a Profile mode for a standard ramped delivery regimen, and a Program mode which delivers up to nine sequential rates and volumes. A Dose/Rate mode also automatically calculates the rate when dose is entered or calculates the dose when rate information is entered. Titration possible.

The Horizon Nxt is also capable of periodic infusion of antibiotics, chemotherapy, or IV infusions according to a schedule programmed by the user.

Up to five Horizon pumps can be daisy-chained together, using the electrical outlet built into each Horizon, reducing the number of wall outlets required.
