CPM (Continuous Passive Motion)

Physicians entrusted with the rehabilitation of professional athletes discovered that leaving a broken or distressed limb encased in an immobile cast often caused irreparable damage to the limb. Muscles which are left to repair themselves without any stretching or movement during the initial recovery phase often mended with less elasticity than they were capable of before the injury. In response, devices were developed which gently flex and extend the muscles during recovery. These devices are called Continuous Passive Motion machines. Some of the most popular lines of CPM machines are made by Danninger and Breg. Orthologic has recently gobbled up many of the smaller CPM manufacturers, including Danninger, making it difficult to obtain newer machines; however, the reliability and durability of the older models ensures a steady supply on the used marketplace.

Danninger Danniflex 400i (DM400I)

The Danniflex 400i is a popular CPM used for the rehabilitation of the lower limb. It is constructed of durable tubular steel and plastic. The patient’s leg is strapped into the device, and the unit then moves the leg back and forth in a slow, controlled, continuous pattern to flex and extend the muscle tissue. Adjustable to most adult limb lengths, and an optional pediatric extension can be substituted for smaller patients. Weighs 24 lb., can be folded up and carried by integral handle. Hand-held, user-friendly control panel with settings for extension, flexion, and speed. Also available is the Danniflex 450, which is identical to the Danniflex 400i except the analog hand-held control pendant has been replaced by one with digital push-button controls and an LCD display. Orthologic has discontinued manufacture of both items in favor of the newer Danniflex 460, but both the 400i and the 450 continue to be available on the used market.

Patient Pad Sets for CPM machines

Both the Danninger and Breg CPM models have pad sets which fit over the steel tubing assemblies and provide more comfortable therapy to the patient. These are disposable pad sets; they can be used for the entire therapy by the same patient, and then are discarded at the end of use. One set will be provided with each rental, but should be billed as a separate product order. There are four types of pad sets, listed below.

MVDA40E Dannninger Economy CPM Pad Set, (fits all models)
MVDA40I Danninger CPM Pad Set, Model 400i
