BiPAP/CPAP
BiPAP (Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure) and CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) devices are designed to augment the breathing of a spontaneously-breathing adult patient. Unlike ventilators, it will not breathe for the patient, but instead helps a patient who has chronic respiratory failure, difficulty breathing, or obstructive sleep apnea; it is administered via a mask and does not require intubation of the patient. BiPAP allows the clinician to set both inspiratory and expiratory respiration levels, while the less-expensive CPAP machines will blow a constant inspiratory stream of air. BiPAP units can be used as a CPAP by setting the inhalation and exhalation pressures to the same setting.
