CPM (Continuous Passive Motion)
Physicians entrusted with the rehabilitation of professional athletes discovered that leaving a broken or distressed limb encased in an immobile cast often caused irreparable damage to the limb. Muscles which are left to repair themselves without any stretching or movement during the initial recovery phase often mended with less elasticity than they were capable of before the injury. In response, devices were developed which gently flex and extend the muscles during recovery. These devices are called Continuous Passive Motion machines. Some of the most popular lines of CPM machines are made by Danninger and Breg. Orthologic has recently gobbled up many of the smaller CPM manufacturers, including Danninger, making it difficult to obtain newer machines; however, the reliability and durability of the older models ensures a steady supply on the used marketplace.
Breg Flex-Mate
K500
The Breg Flex-Mate K500 provides continuous passive motion to the knee or hip joint to increase circulation, range of motion , and to prevent scarring in the joint. They are similar to the Danninger 450 model in function and in the control pendant, with its push-button controls and LCD display screen. Both the K500 and the Danninger models are ambidextrous (i.e., can be used on either the right or left limb). The foot plates on each can be tilted to the right or the left to make CPM therapy more comfortable for the patient, and the metal tubing extends to fit most adult limb sizes. Unlike the Danninger, no optional piece is required to fit pediatric patients on the Breg; instead, the foot plate bracket is rotated 180 degrees inward towards the smaller patient, then readjusted for the new limb length.
Suggested Substitutions: Danninger 400i, Danninger 450, Danninger 460
Patient Pad Sets for CPM machines
Both the Danninger and Breg CPM models have pad sets which fit over the steel tubing assemblies and provide more comfortable therapy to the patient. These are disposable single-patient use pad sets; they can be used for the entire therapy by the same patient, and then are discarded at the end of use. One set will be provided with each rental, but should be billed as a separate product order. There are four types of pad sets, listed below.
| MVDA40E | Dannninger Economy CPM Pad Set, (fits all models) |
| MVDA40I | Danninger CPM Pad Set, Model 400i |
| MVDA45 | Danninger CPM Pad Set, Model 450 |
| MVDBRG-50 | Breg K-500 CPM Pad Set |
