Baxter (Bard) Ambulatory Pumps and Sets

The Baxter (formerly Bard) Ambulatory PCA pump (not to be confused with the Bard Harvard PCA pump, a older syringe device which uses only 60 ml. syringes) is a lightweight, 9-volt battery-operated linear peristaltic device. It comes with a convenient carry case that allows complete patient mobility. The pump is capable of both intermittent, continuous, and/or continuous w/bolus infusions. It has a programmable concentration, and can program basal rate, bolus dose, one-hour limits, and dosage time delays (lockout between injections). A 3-volt internal lithium battery provides backup support to retain program and memory settings.

The control panel consists of an LCD screen, a red LED status light, and an 8-function keypad. An external PCA bolus button is also provides, along with keys which lock the pump. The 100-ml reservoir fits inside the pump when using the 100 ml reservoir cover, and infusion volumes up to 250 ml. can be performed using the 250 ml reservoir cover.

The Baxter (Bard) Ambulatory PCA (BDPCA) and the Baxter AP II use the same sets and reservoirs. Each requires a 100ml or 250ml reservoir and a tubing set, available in lengths of 72" or 101". Rental pumps are shipped with a 100ml Reservoir Cover; an optional 250ml Reservoir Cover is available.

It should also be noted that Baxter has discontinued production of new Bard Ambulatory PCA devices as of June 1994; they will discontinue production of refurbished PCA’s in June of 1995. They will continue to support service of the product through 1999, but CSR’s can substitute the newer AP II for the Ambulatory PCA pump, and Baxter will continue to manufacture the sets to support the AP II.

Baxter AP II Ambulatory Pump

The Baxter AP II is a lightweight, ambulatory linear peristaltic infusion pump capable of continuous, PCA, or a combination of basal infusion and bolus dosing. It can be programmed in milliters, milligrams, or micrograms.

Its features include a backlit, 2-line liquid crystal display, delay start, history/prescription recall, printer output port, locking fluid bag cover, and security code entry; the pump runs on a 9V alkaline battery or using the (included) AC adaptor, with a 3-volt lithium backup battery to retain programs and history. Remote dose button, included as a standard accessory, must be used to administer PCA doses.

Optional accessories include the 100 and 150 ml. bags and accompanying 100 and 250 ml. fluid bag covers, pole clamp, and printer adapter. Adminis-tration sets are available in lengths of 72" and 101", and special-use sets include an anti-reflux Y-set, an epidural set, and an air-eliminating spiked pump set.
