AVI/3M (Graseby) Infusion Devices
AVI infusion pumps all work on the piston displacement design, requiring a dedicated two-chambered set which alternately fills and is expelled into the lower tubing. AVI pumps have a greater accuracy than many pumps, being rated at +/- 2%, and offer a number of general-use home and hospital models, along with some more specialized models for specific therapies.
3M recently introduced a free-flow prevention mechanism in newer models which requires a set with a "safety clip". When inserted into the mechanism, located below the set access door, it prevents free-flow of medication by clamping off the line when the door is opened by accident. Older models such as 100, 200, and 400 series can use the new sets (designated by an "8C" prefix), but newer models such as the 280RT and 480 series will not operate without the safety clip installed.
Although all AVI models except for the AVI 3000 Mustang have been discontinued , earlier models are still available, and parts are still obtainable, to a certain degree, for pumps. 3M has recently discontinued manufacture of the AVI 200 power regulator board, which means that if this part burns out, no replacement will be possible, and an otherwise healthy pump will be unfixable if used parts cannot be located.
The AVI/3M Infusion line was purchased by Graseby Medical, which in turn was aquired by Smith Industries, parent company of Sims Deltec. Graseby Medical recently announced that they will discontinue manufacture of all former AVI models except for the 3000/3010 series. Although the discontinued models will be supported for an undisclosed amount of time by Graseby, it can be assumed that over time the parts and compatible sets will eventually be phased out completely.
