Unlike the earlier competing Sims Deltec ambulatory devices, where
a different pump is used for each different type of therapy, Abbot
has espoused a philosophy of developing pumps which provide a broad
range of functions using a single device. Except for the Provider
One+, which was specifically designed for TPN infusions, all the
Abbott ambulatory devices listed here can be used for a range or
combination of different therapies. Although this can be more
cost-effective for the home care provider, it tends to heighten the
difficulties of programming, with so many program options available.
All the Abbott provider pumps use the same type of mechanism for
infusion sets, and the sets are interchangeable between the different
devices. They are rotary peristaltic devices, rated at +/- 5%
accuracy.
Manufacture of these pump models was discontinued by Abbott
effective January 1, 2000; service support will continue to be
provided until the end of December 2000. The newer Abbott AIM
performs all of the functions of both pumps, and Abbott's decision to
discontinue these models probably had as much to do with the desire
to sell the newer technology as it did with concern over the aging of
older pumps.
